The value of women’s leadership: NDI supports the 5th Annual Ukranian Women’s Congress

Source: NDI

Despite the fact that 61 percent of Ukrainians believe men and women should be equally involved in political life, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in Ukrainian politics. In this context, organizations and events that bring together women from across Ukraine to share knowledge and build connections are vital components of any effort to strengthen women’s involvement in national and local politics in Ukraine.

On September 15 and 16, NDI and implementing partner the Ukrainian Women’s Congress NGO assembled, virtually and in-person, 175 participants and more than 11,000 online viewers for the 5th Ukrainian Women’s Congress (UWC). The UWC is an annual event that brings together participants and speakers from across Ukraine to further the development of a comprehensive, cross-sectoral, and diverse gender equality movement. Leaders from the private, public, and civil society sectors delivered panels on topics including women’s leadership, making communities free from gender discrimination, and the role of local government in foreign policy. The event featured breakout sessions on sector-specific topics, including panels for civil society representatives, political parties, and local governments.
